Story, Personality & Size - Week 9

Story, Personality & Size for Design

Week 9 - Oct 16, 2018

Arrange vehicle from various sources in an accurate line up that shows scale and contrast. Focus on big shapes next to small. Contrast = Character.

Using a WWI period portrait of a General as a foundation (in Photoshop), cut and paste the eyes, nose and mouth to exaggerate the personality of the man and create a photo caricature that emphasizes the attitude and expression. With the CLone Stamp Tool, push the photo as far as possible without losing the identity of the General portrayed in the picture. Work rough and loose. Don't work about the details at this stage.

After changing proportions...

With an understanding of small changes to the face having a great impact on character, take 6 portraits of a 3D model of a General from the film "Turkeys" (Free Birds) and transform him from a modern General to a German Commander from WWI. Use photo reference and research to ensure your details are accurate. Play with the scale of costume elements to advance the design theory of appealing big & small shapes and straight lines against curved. Do at least 6 variations to show a working development of the character.

Rough costume changes indicated...

Game Concept Art 1 & 2 will add a NEW playable character along with Joey the horse. War Dogs will also be a part of the story of War Horse. Design a dog for one of the armies fighting in WWI. The breed of dog should be specific to the country he represents. Doberman would be a German breed. Bull Mastiff might be British. Reference Sgt Stubby from WWI, a highly decorated war dog from the American Army (see attached photos).

Think of interesting ways for the dog to interact with the horse on the battlefield.

Game Concept Art 2 will add an additional army to the battlefield by designing the troops, horses, tank and "boss" from the Russian Army. I have included photos of generals, soldiers and some armor.

The "boss" will be Rasputin, the "Mad Monk". Take advantage of the rumors and mystery surrounding his healing powers and mystic mystic abilities. Is he able to heal soldiers or bring them back from the dead?
